DSM, Provexis plc’s Alliance partner for Fruitflow®, is a proud innovation partner of Team Sunweb, the professional cycling team.

Team Sunweb competes in elite cycling events like the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France, with the team seeking to become a significant, sustainable, and recognizable party at the highest levels of international cycling.

DSM, together with sport nutrition specialists Born Sportscare, have created a number of tailored supplements for Team Sunweb, and the Team is now using Fruitflow® to help their elite athletes prepare for endurance exercise. Fruitflow®’s effects on blood platelets help to reduce the inflammation generated during exercise, which can in turn impact recovery.

    About Fruitflow®

Fruitflow® is a natural, breakthrough ingredient that helps with platelet aggregation. This helps promote normal blood flow and circulation, which benefits your cardiovascular health. It helps the platelets to circulate freely and smoothly throughout your blood, without sticking to one another or to the blood vessels themselves. Freely flowing blood helps reduce stress on your cardiovascular system.

Fruitflow® is a wholly natural extract from the clear jelly around the seeds of tomatoes, and it is a highly concentrated form of bioactives which contains over 30 known anti-platelet compounds.

Published clinical studies have shown that Fruitflow® works to maintain healthy blood flow in a similar way to 75mg aspirin but with a milder and reversible action. Fruitflow® has a similar antiplatelet effect to a single dose of aspirin – but when taken daily, it has none of aspirin’s side effects.

The World Health Organization reports that more people die annually from CVDs than from any other cause, and the US FDA states here that after carefully examining scientific data from major studies, it has concluded ‘the data do not support the use of aspirin as a preventive medication by people who have not had a heart attack, stroke or cardiovascular problems, a use that is called ‘primary prevention.’ In such people, the benefit has not been established but risks – such as dangerous bleeding into the brain or stomach – are still present.’

The science behind Fruitflow® has been validated by leading peer review publications and regulatory authorities. Fruitflow® is the only natural antiplatelet to have a health claim approved by the European Food Safety Authority, stating that 150mg of Fruitflow® ‘helps maintain normal platelet aggregation, which contributes to healthy blood flow’.

Provexis entered into a long-term Alliance Agreement with DSM Nutritional Products in 2010 to commercialise Fruitflow® through sales as an ingredient to brand owners in the food, beverage and dietary supplement categories. The Alliance is seeing the partners collaborate to develop Fruitflow® in all major global markets, through an effective commercialisation of current formats and pioneering new and significant applications.

In 2016 the Company conducted a Key Opinion Leaders’ roundtable event for Fruitflow® in London, focussed on raising awareness of the importance of blood flow in cardiovascular health, and the effectiveness of dietary antiplatelets. The roundtable was attended by key scientists from Provexis and DSM, along with a number of interested health care professionals with close links to the media. The event was recorded and some of the resulting videos can be seen here. The Company and DSM are keen to secure greater medical advocacy for Fruitflow® and the roundtable event formed part of this strategy.

In December 2013 British and international patent applications were filed for the use of Fruitflow® in mitigating exercise-induced inflammation and for promoting recovery from intense exercise, seeking to enhance further the potential of the technology in the sports nutrition sector. The Company is keen to progress the formulation and launch of a Fruitflow® + nitrates dietary supplement product which would be supported by the Company’s strong patent position in this area. The product would have anti-inflammatory and circulation benefits for athletes seeking to recover after exercise, properties which would also be potentially beneficial to a wide range of other consumers to include people suffering from the symptoms of basic ageing.

The Company has been engaged in a two stage collaboration agreement with the University of Oslo to undertake further research into the relationship between Fruitflow® and blood pressure regulation. In December 2016 the Company announced the results from the second stage of the collaboration, a pilot study which indicated that a standard dose of Fruitflow® in powder format significantly lowered average 24-hour systolic blood pressure compared to placebo. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure were shown to be significantly lower whilst trial subjects were awake, a clinically relevant reduction in blood pressure which is expected to be of interest to a large number of consumers and patients with a wide range of cardiovascular conditions. In September 2017 the results from the blood pressure collaboration were published in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition.

In December 2017 the Company announced the filing of a patent application relating to the use of Fruitflow® in protecting against the adverse effects of air pollution on the body’s cardiovascular system.

Recent laboratory work has shown that Fruitflow® can reduce the platelet activation caused by airborne particulate matter, such as that from diesel emissions, by approximately one third. The beneficial effects of this reduction can be observed in laboratory models representing healthy subjects as well as in models representing subjects with an underlying cardiovascular problem.

The World Health Organization estimates that in 2012 around 1 in 9 deaths were attributed to exposure to air pollution, making it the largest environmental risk factor for ill health, with 92% of the world’s population living in places where air quality levels exceed WHO limits.

The encouraging laboratory results for Fruitflow® in reducing the platelet activation caused by airborne particulate matter suggest that Fruitflow could have a significant role to play in mitigating the effects of air pollution, a truly global health issue.

The science behind Fruitflow® is summarised in a short video here.
